Hotel Parking is No Joke

by Daniel 21. June 2011 17:55

Oh, the shock when you check out of your hotel and realize just how much it costs to park your car. Everyday travelers are ambushed by hotel parking rates that tack on as much as 25% to the cost of their stay. That’s another room night over a four-day stay, or a great dinner during a weekend stay. What’s the deal?

We analyzed consumer feedback on parking rates across the country and found some startling data. The average daily parking rate for the most popular U.S. cities can cost you anywhere from $10 a day in cities like Boulder, CO or Santa Barbara, CA, and up to $40 a day in San Francisco, CA or Chicago, IL.

As expected, San Francisco and New York City boast the most expensive parking rates in the U.S. You can expect to pay $65 to park at the The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco, or $60 at The Waldorf Astoria or Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York. San Francisco also got the honor of having the highest median parking rates along with Chicago at $40 a day. New York City and Boston were close behind with an average daily rate of $36.

The good news is that a car isn’t always necessary for vacations in most major U.S. cities. Most hotels with downtown locations offer free shuttles to the local attractions, and, if the hotel doesn’t provide transportation, then the city often does. In Seattle, a trolley runs the length of the waterfront and all metro buses are free in the downtown area. Denver has a similar free downtown bus service called MallRide, and Atlanta has the Buc. There are many other programs. Just remember to check the city’s visitors bureau Website for information.

However, if you have to bring your car there are resources that can help you plan your stay. The travel Website, OpinionWell.com, provides an easy to use interactive map of parking rates for most popular U.S. destinations. You can find the median parking rates for a city as well as parking rates for hotels where data is available. OpinionWell also lists hotels that offer free parking.

So, if you have to bring your car and you plan to stay in a metropolitan area, then be prepared to pay.

Parking space is at a premium in most downtown areas where the nicer hotels are found, and if you are planning to have a car during your next trip, you better factor in the cost of the convenience.

Selling Free – What Hotels Give Away for Free

by Daniel 16. June 2011 23:12

There’s nothing wrong with looking for the little extras from your hotel during a sluggish economy. The good news is that hotels are more than willing to accommodate you. It is common these days to get complimentary services from a hotel and it’s important to know what these services include.

The most common of complimentary services is the free shuttle or limousine service to the city’s downtown area or local shopping destination. Family oriented hotels will offer a complimentary continental breakfast, which typically consists of hot and cold cereals, muffins along with juice and coffee, but there are hotels that offer more.

A new complimentary service is free in-room wireless internet or WiFi. Most hotels now offer free WiFi in their lobbies but a select few extend this service to the guest rooms, which could save you $15 a day. Lastly, is free parking. Parking is another big extra during a hotel stay and some hotels give it away.

We’ve outlined the top four complimentary services but there are others. Don’t be shy when you check in. Ask the front desk what complimentary services they offer.

Most cities have a hotel that is known for their freebies but also their good service. We’ve put together some examples to get you started. The customer feedback for these hotels stuck out in our analysis of hotel reviews.

The Watertown hotel is a traveler favorite in Seattle that offers a convenient location, good service and all four of the standard freebies. In addition, they offer a full hot breakfast along with free cookies and laundry service. Similarly, the Wingate Inn Atlanta – Buckhead also offers the free local shuttle, continental breakfast, in-room WiFi and parking.

The free offerings do get harder to find when you get to the larger cities. Residence Inn Chicago and the Magic Castle Hotel in Los Angeles offer the typical freebies minus free parking. However, a good meal is important in the mid-west and Residence Inn Chicago does offer a full hot breakfast and a light dinner buffet on week days. The Magic Castle Hotel does makes up for the parking with free DVDs, laundry facilities, and mini bar.

Similarly, the Magnolia Hotel Denver and Magnolia Hotel Houston both provide free shuttle, continental breakfast, and in-room WiFi, but no parking; however, they do provide free happy hour drinks. So, you won’t go thirsty at this hotel chain.

What ever the destination you are sure to find hotels that offer complimentary services and OpinionWell can help you find them. Look for the “Free Services” link in the Recommended Searches section of the city page for your destination. OpinionWell includes a list of popular destinations on the home page.
