5. In that dense atmosphere sleep was difficult, by the morning both my wife and I had sore throats and headaches - the left over smoke and lack of window were REALLY bad.

6. The property could use renovations (upholstery was a little threadbare and our shower controls lacked a handle) but the bed was good, the maid service was excellent and the hustle of M Street was offset by quiet walks along the historic canal at the rear of the hotel.

9. For an extended stay, what the Latham lacks in amenities (restricted and expensive dining options, no or poor fitness center, lack of self parking, no microwaves, refrigerators or good coffee facilities even in suites) it more than makes up for in character and impeccable, friendly service.
