1. this place is a bit far from Hilo which is on the other side of island, you may want to consider staying in Hilo as well for few nights to avoid traveling.

2. The sandy beaches of Kohala were 30 min or so depending on the traffic (try to plan on avoiding the roads between 3:30-6:30 M-F).
