Given that all of the public buildings we visited AND Times Square have free open wifi access, I find this a bit quaint.

That was my first visit to NYC and I just loved the city, but the hotel wasn't exactly what I expectedFirst they charge for wifi access, although you can get free access at many nearby stores, like Borders, McDonalds and Starbucks.

They have a business center in the lobby which requires you to pay by the minute, although WiFi was also available in the lobby -- for a charge.

The lobby is completely open to the public (overfowing from people just out of Penn Station looking for a place to take a break), the staff is rude, check-in takes forever, you have to use pre-paid wifi in the lobby (the signal didn't make it to my 3rd floor room).
"very, very unpleasant surprise "
