There were paint peels and nicks everywhere; chips and permanent stains on the nightstand by our bed,

carpeting and curtains, and even the lobby furniture showed its wear as well.

Understandably I'd been given a room that hadn't yet been refurbished, but the public spaces at this hotel are unpardonably shabby:

out upholstery, grubby and chipped signage in the elevators (one of which smelled very, very unpleasant.
